Your Photo Albums, Preserved Before They Fall Apart

Old photo albums hold a lifetime of memories - handwritten notes, faded prints, and moments that exist nowhere else. But albums age, pages stick, and photos can be damaged just by turning a page. I digitize albums carefully in Colwood, handling every one with patience and respect.

Professional photo album digitization in Victoria, BC

Albums are more fragile than they look

The adhesives, plastic sleeves, and magnetic pages used in photo albums were meant to protect your photos. Decades later, they are often the thing causing the damage.

The handwriting disappears too

Albums often carry more than photos. Names, dates, captions, the note written under a Christmas portrait. When the album goes, so does all of that.

Estate collections need attention now

A box of albums sitting in storage ages faster than one in a climate-controlled home. Waiting a few more years is not neutral - it costs quality.

Why Photo Albums Are More Fragile Than They Look

Photo albums were never designed to last decades. Adhesives dry out, plastic sleeves trap moisture, and sticky pages can permanently bond to photos. Over time, simply opening an album can cause tearing, curling, or loss of emulsion. Digitizing your albums now protects both the images and the story, before handling them becomes risky or impossible.

Types of Albums I Digitize

Standard Photo Albums

I scan pages in place to preserve the original layout and any handwritten notes, or carefully remove photos for individual scanning when the album allows it.

Magnetic and Sticky-Page Albums

These are the albums that cause the most damage over time. The adhesive dries and becomes acidic, yellowing and sticking to photos. I have specific techniques for handling them without tearing the prints.

Scrapbook-Style Albums

The context around the photos is part of the memory. I scan scrapbook pages as complete compositions so the layout, captions, and ephemera are preserved alongside the images.

Three Ways I Digitize Photo Albums

Every album is different. These are the three proven approaches I use, chosen based on condition, budget, and how you want the memories preserved.

Scan Album Pages As-Is

Best for: Scrapbook-style albums, handwritten notes, captions, and visual layouts. I scan the entire page intact, preserving the original context, including writing, decorations, and photo placement, exactly as it exists today.

Careful Photo Removal

Best for: Albums where photos can be safely removed. I gently detach photos and scan them individually using high-efficiency workflows. This dramatically lowers cost while producing clean, high-resolution images, ideal for large legacy albums.

Sticky and Magnetic Pages

Best for: Sticky, self-adhesive, or plastic-overlay albums. These are the riskiest to handle. I use slow, controlled techniques, often scanning pages intact, to avoid tearing or image loss. If removal is unsafe, I won't force it.

A Careful, Album-First Approach

I don't treat albums like loose photos, because they aren't. Before scanning, I assess the album type, page material, adhesive condition, and photo stability. Some albums are best scanned page-by-page to preserve layout and notes. Others can be carefully dismantled so photos are scanned individually in bulk, reducing cost while improving image quality. I explain the options clearly, and nothing is removed without your approval.

Asked Often

Will you remove photos from the album?

Only if it's the right approach for that album, and only with your approval. Some albums are better scanned page-by-page. I'll tell you what I recommend and why.

What about sticky magnetic albums?

I can work with them. These are the trickiest to handle and I won't rush them. I'll let you know what's possible before starting.

Can you preserve the handwriting and captions on the pages?

Yes. Page-by-page scanning captures everything on the page, including handwritten labels, dates, and decorations, exactly as it appears in the album.

Can you scan the entire album page?

Yes. This preserves handwritten notes and layouts.

Should I remove photos from old albums first?

No. These albums are often fragile. I’ll handle them safely.

What if photos are stuck to the page?

I can scan through sleeves or scan the full page safely.

How long does it take?

A standard album of 40-60 pages is typically part of a 1-2 week project. I'll give you a timeline at drop-off.

What about handwritten notes or layouts in albums?

I can scan entire album pages, preserving captions, notes, and creative layouts so the story behind the photos stays intact.

What My Clients Say

I found a tape of my grandmother telling family stories from the 80s. I was terrified to play it. Dave handled it so carefully and the digital audio file he sent me is a treasure my whole family now has. The fact that I could just drop it off in Colwood was a huge relief.
