Your Family's Home Videos, Rescued from Tape
I convert VHS, Betamax, Hi8, MiniDV, and other home video formats into files your family can actually watch, without shipping your only copies anywhere.

Every tape that sits is a tape that is degrading
Tapes do not last forever
Magnetic tape begins to break down within 20 to 30 years. Humidity, heat, and age cause the oxide layer to shed. Once the picture goes, there is no recovering it.
Most formats can no longer be played
VHS players are gone from most homes. Hi8 and Betamax cameras are museum pieces. Every year that passes, the equipment to read your tapes gets harder to find.
These are the only copies
Home videos from the 1980s and 90s were never backed up. The tape in that box may be the only recording of a voice, a face, a moment that will never come back.
Your Tapes Never Leave Colwood
I have been working with home video formats since VHS was the standard. I know what a degraded tape looks and sounds like, and I know how to get the most out of it. Your tapes stay in my Colwood workshop from the moment you drop them off. They're never shipped to a processing centre. I do every transfer myself, on professional-grade decks maintained for the job. If a tape is in poor condition, I'll tell you what's recoverable before I start. No surprises.

Formats I Work With
VHS & VHS-C
VHS is the most common format I see. I have dedicated decks maintained for the full range of tape conditions, from a pristine 1990 birthday party to a tape that's been in a garage for decades.
Betamax, Hi8 & Video8
These formats often hold some of the oldest and most irreplaceable footage I work with. I have the equipment to read them, and I test every tape carefully before attempting playback.
MiniDV & Digital8
MiniDV recordings are transferred digitally, preserving the original quality without analog conversion. Digital8 cameras also play earlier Hi8 and Video8 tapes, which I test for on every pass.
How the Transfer Works
Home video transfers are not just plug-and-play. The quality of the output depends on the condition of the tape, the quality of the playback deck, and the capture chain. Here is how I approach every job.
Tape Conditioning
Tapes that need cleaning go through a conditioning pass before playback. This protects both the tape and the equipment, and often recovers footage that would otherwise be unwatchable.
Professional Capture
I capture through a time-base corrector and dedicated video capture hardware. The result is a stable digital file that preserves as much of the original picture and audio as the tape allows.
Asked Often
Do I need to clean or prepare my tapes before drop-off?
No. Bring them as they are. I inspect every tape before playback and handle any cleaning or conditioning needed here.
Are videotapes time-sensitive?
Yes. Magnetic tape degrades over time, which is why many people choose to digitize sooner.
Can I watch the videos on a modern TV?
Yes. Your videos will play on modern TVs, phones, and computers.
Can you fix a broken videotape?
I don’t perform physical tape repairs. I can guide you to repair services if needed.
What if I don’t know what’s on the tapes?
That’s very common. I don't have any players I can rent, or the means to preview your tapes I'm afraid. I can promise you though, if I find that a VHS tape actually has television shows, I can skip that for you free of charge. Unless you want the tv shows digitized of course.
What types of videotapes do you convert?
I convert all the popular home video formats including VHS, VHS-C, Betamax, Video8, Hi8, Digital8 and MiniDV.
How much does it cost to digitize a VHS tape?
Most tapes are $30 each, any format including VHS, VHS-C, Betamax, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, and MiniDV, up to 2.5 hours per tape. For 10 tapes or more, it's $25 each. You get a free estimate before I start any work, so you know the total up front.
What if a tape is damaged or won't play?
I'll tell you what I find before starting any work. Some tapes have recoverable footage even when they look damaged. Others may have sections that are gone. I'll always give you an honest assessment before we proceed.
What format will my videos be in?
You'll get your videos as MP4 files, which play on every device, phone, tablet, smart TV, and laptop. I deliver them on a USB drive, or via private download link if you prefer.
Can you put them on DVD instead?
I can, though most families find USB or download more practical these days. A DVD player is getting as hard to find as a VHS player. That said, if you want DVDs, I'll make them.
How long does it take?
A small collection of 5 to 10 tapes is typically ready in 1 to 2 weeks. Larger batches take longer. I'll give you a realistic estimate at drop-off.
What happens to my tapes after the transfer?
Your original tapes come back to you. Nothing is kept, erased, or discarded without your permission. If you want me to responsibly dispose of tapes you no longer need, I can arrange that too.
What My Clients Say
“I found a tape of my grandmother telling family stories from the 80s. I was terrified to play it. Dave handled it so carefully and the digital audio file he sent me is a treasure my whole family now has. The fact that I could just drop it off in Colwood was a huge relief.”
Transparent pricing. Every job guaranteed.
