That Damaged Photo Is Not Beyond Saving

A creased, torn, spotted, or faded family photograph feels like a loss. But before you give up on it, know that digital restoration can bring it back. Your original photo is never altered. All work happens on a digital copy, so the original stays exactly as you handed it to me.

Professional digital photo restoration in Victoria, BC

Damage looks permanent but often is not

A torn corner, a crease through a face, a photo faded to near-white - most of these are recoverable with high-resolution scanning and careful digital work.

The scan has to come first

Restoration starts with the original. A low-resolution scan captures the damage and the noise, not the detail underneath. Getting the scan right is the whole job.

Some photos exist only as that one damaged print

There is no negative. No backup. No duplicate. If that print continues to deteriorate, so does the memory. There is no second chance to get this right.

A Careful Scan Comes First

Successful restoration depends entirely on the quality of the initial scan. A low-quality scan cannot capture the fine detail needed for a good result. I begin by scanning your original photograph at high resolution, typically 1200 DPI, using a professional-grade Epson flatbed scanner. This creates a pristine digital copy that captures every nuance of the original image.

Types of Damage I Restore

Physical Damage

Physical damage to a print is repaired digitally after a careful high-resolution scan. Torn edges, fold lines across faces, and water staining are all recoverable in most cases.

Colour Fading

Colour dye in photographic prints shifts over decades. A print that has gone orange, magenta, or washed-out can often be corrected back toward its original palette - sometimes dramatically.

Surface Deterioration

Some damage happens below the surface - a chemical reaction in the paper or emulsion. Where the original information still exists, it can usually be recovered. Where it has been destroyed, I can reconstruct it from context.

My Restoration Process

With a high-resolution digital file secured, I use a combination of advanced software and AI-assisted tools to perform the restoration. I carefully repair physical damage like rips and creases, remove spots and stains, and correct years of color fading. The goal is always to restore the image as faithfully as possible, not to invent what was not there.

Asked Often

Will the original photo be altered?

No. I work from a high-resolution digital copy. Your original photo comes back to you exactly as it arrived.

What kinds of damage can be repaired?

I can repair rips, tears, creases, water stains, spots, and fading. Severe structural damage or missing image areas may limit what's possible. I'll give you an honest assessment upfront.

How long does it take?

A standard restoration is typically ready in 1 to 2 weeks. Complex repairs take longer. I'll give you a realistic timeline with your estimate.

Can you restore very old or faded photos?

Often yes. The older and more faded a photo, the less detail there is to work with, but I can usually improve it meaningfully. Bring it in and I'll show you what's there before committing to anything.

Can we choose which photos to restore?

Yes. Restoration is always selective and discussed in advance.

Do you restore faded or damaged photos?

Yes. Restoration is optional and done digitally.

Will my original photo be altered?

No. Your original is never changed.

What My Clients Say

I found a tape of my grandmother telling family stories from the 80s. I was terrified to play it. Dave handled it so carefully and the digital audio file he sent me is a treasure my whole family now has. The fact that I could just drop it off in Colwood was a huge relief.
